Abstract
Urea salts are obtained by treating concentrated solutions of free cyanamide, obtained for example as described in Specification 151,597 and concentrated by repeating the process using the dilute cyanamide to dissolve further quantities of calcium cyanamide, with sulphuric acid, or other cheap acid, and a salt of the acid of which the urea salt is required; suitable salts are alkali, alkaline earth, and ammonium nitrates and chlorides, for example, those of sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium. In an example sulphuric acid and ammonium or an alkali nitrate are used; the mixed product may be used directly as a manure, or urea nitrate crystallized out. The filtrate containing ammonium sulphate may be treated with calcium nitrate, filtered from plaster of paris, and evaporated for ammonium nitrate; or the mixture may be evaporated without filtering, for use as a manure.ALSO:Concentrated solutions of cyanamide are obtained from calcium cyanamide by multiple extraction, that is the calcium salt is decomposed, for example by carbon dioxide as described in Specification 151,597, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], and the dilute solution of cyanamide obtained is used to dissolve further quantities of calcium cyanamide. In an example of the process described for converting the cyanamide into urea, sulphuric acid and ammonium nitrate are employed. The urea nitrate is crystallized out and the filtrate containing ammonium sulphate may be treated with calcium nitrate, filtered from calcium sulphate and evaporated for ammonium nitrate.
