Abstract

178,829. Koenemann, E. April 22, 1921, [Convention date]. Caustic soda and like boilers.-In a caustic soda or like boiler, the heat generated by mixing exhaust steam with the concentrated lye is used for evaporating the diluted lye. Hot concentrated lye passes upwardly through a coiled pipe 5 in the boiler 3 and is led through a pressure-reducing valve 6 into a chamber 7 supplied with exhaust steam. The mixed steam and lye passes through heating coils 8, 9, 10 on the boiler in turn, additional exhaust being added before entering each upper coil. A pump 11 forces the diluted lye back into the boiler. The steam generated is used for heating or power purposes. The last heating coil containing the finally diluted lye may be led through a compartment at the bottom of the boiler under reduced pressure. Additional water may be added to the lye before entering the evaporator, the additional heat required for evaporation being supplied from an external source. The concentrated lye and exhaust steam may be mixed in an injector 15, Fig. 4, the mixture being led upwards through a coiled pipe 18 in the evaporator. The mixture may enter a tank, from which it is discharged under reduced pressure, the steam so generated being led off for use, and the remaining lye may be evaporated by an external source of heat.
