Abstract

178,091. Durville, P. H. G. April 2, 1921, [Convention date]. Casting processes; moulds.-To avoid agitation of the metal during upward casting this is effected in such a way that the level of the metal in the runner is approximately equal to that in the mould and that the fall of the metal as it is poured into the runner is kept small and constant. The runner consists of a plurality of elements 5, 6 - - , Fig. 2, which are added as the casting progresses. There may be one or more sand or metal moulds fed from one or more runners, Fig. 6, which are supplied simultaneously, as by a ladle with several spouts or stoppers, or successively. The elements 5 &c. may be wholly or partly of metal and lined with sand or refractory material and they may be socketed, Fig. 5, or fixed when in position or both. Horizontal or inclined supplementary conduits 12, Fig. 4, may also be employed. When the mould is nearly full metal may be poured at the top 11.
