Abstract
177,569. Ferguson, C. H. Nov. 24, 1920. Casings and supports; dynamos, cooling; dynamos, driving.-In a portable electric lighting and power plant comprising an internal - combustion engine coupled to a dynamo, between which is a fly-wheel also serving as a cooling fan, the casings of the engine and dynamo are carried by the side plates of the fly-wheel housing, the object of the arrangement being to secure good alignment of the different parts. The dynamo casing 46 is fitted to an opening 44 on one side of the fly-wheel housing 1. An outer casing 59 forms a petrol tank 58 and is provided with openings 60 through which cooling-air is drawn by the fanblades 7. One of the dynamo bearings 49 is situated at the end of the casing 46, where are also the commutator 52, brush 54 for ignition, and attachment 55 for a starting handle. The other bearing 11 is carried by a plate 10 fitted to an opening 9 in the other side of the housing 1. The plate 10 is formed in one with the crank casing and carries the engine cylinder 14. The crank 22 is attached to the dynamo shaft 8 by a sleeve 24 and a spline, and also serves to drive a disc 18 forming a valve controlling the fuel inlet 16, Fig. 4, in the plate 10. The valve is held in place in a recess 15 in the plate 10 by a, spring disc 26 between it and the crank and is provided with a projection 20 entering a hole 21 in the crank 22. Air drawn by the fan 7 through the dynamo and over the crank casing is discharged through an opening 40 over the cylinder, which is provided with fins &c. 38.
