Abstract

176,346. Liebau, R., (Assignee of Hilscher, C.). March 4, 1921, [Convention date]. Pneumatic springs. - Shock-absorbers for motor vehicles &c. are pivotally and adjustably mounted on the chassis, and the absorbers on opposite sides of the vehicle are connected by transverse rods of adjustable length so that they may be brought into parallel positions. As shown in Fig. 1, the shock-absorber 1, which is connected at 2 to the bearing-springs 3, is pivoted at 5 to a shoe 7 secured on the chassis, its position about the pivot being adjusted by a screw 6. The shock-absorbers on opposite sides of the vehicle are connected by transverse rods 11, 12 consisting of right- and left-hand threaded portions connected by a nut or sleeve 15, Fig. 2. Transverse adjustment is permitted by the elasticity of the frame and springs, but to facilitate this adjustment the shock-absorber mav be pivoted at 42, Fig. 10, to a member 45 which is pivoted to the shoe 43 on the chassis by means of a longitudinal pivot 46. The shock-absorber may be connected to the chassis by a ball joint. In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 9, the adjustment of the shock-absorber about its pivot is effected by a transverse screw 37 formed with a member 35 which engages a groove 34 on the shock-absorber and is provided with an inclined feather 36 engaging a correspondingly inclined groove in a part 31 on the shoe 30. The screw is moved transversely by means of nuts 38 on its ends. The shock-absorbers may be mounted in inclined or horizontal positions.
