Abstract

174,986. Wade, H., (Fulton Co.). Oct. 6, 1920. Compression-spoke wheels; spokes, securing; hubs.-In wheels of the tvpe comprising tubular metal spokes provided at their inner ends with hollow wedge-shaped portions which fit together to form the wheel centre and are secured between flanges on a central tubular liner, the hub flanges 2 have sleeve extensions 2<a> which fit on the hub barrel 1 and are secured either by washers 3. 4 and the expanded ends 6 of the hub barrel or by a nut or a cap serving as a lock-nut. The spokes 9 may be formed of seamless tube or of sheet metal rolled into tube form. The butt ends are provided with bolt holes 11 and the metal is cut away as at 18 to facilitate the formation of this part of the spokes. The inner ends of the spokes when they bear on the hub barrel are curved. Projections 13 struck up from the rim enter the outer ends of the spokes and form the connection between them. The wheel, when assembled and before the application of the cap, is dipped in japan and baked so as to have the appearance of an integral wheel. The cap 5, Fig. 2, is of sheet metal, which may be nickel plated, and is secured to the washer 4 by interengaging lugs 4a, 5<a>.
