Abstract

174,667. Duggan, W. G., and Ash, D. Aug. 30, 1920. Link-motions and linkage, gears. - In locomotive and other steam engines having two cranks at 90‹, or three cranks at 120‹, the lap and lead motion and travel of each valve are obtained from levers operated by links connected to two cross heads. In the two-cylinder construction, Fig. 1, lap and lead motion is imparted to the valve rod v<1> by the cross head c<1> through a compensating- lever a<1>, connected thereto by links e<1>, b<1>, and the lever l<1>, which also oscillates a shaft s<1> to effect the travel of the valve in the adjacent cylinder. The travel of the valve is imparted to the valve v<1> by a rod r<1> connected by a link f<1> to a crank u<1> on a shaft s<2> oscillated by the cross head of the adjacent cylinder. The rods r<1>, f<1> are connected by a link d<1> to a lever d<2> on a reversing- shaft w. In the three-cylinder construction, the valve of each cylinder is operated by a slotted link, the two ends of which are reciprocated by the cross heads of the other two cylinders respectively for forward and reverse gear. The radiusrods are of equal length and are operated by cranks on a countershaft connected to one cross head through links and levers directly, and to the other cross heads through the intermediary of secondary countershafts, cranks, and links.
