Field carriages.-The spreading trail-beams a, a<1>, shown in plan in Fig. 2, are each fitted with detachable endless tracks b, and means such as a plate h<1> carried by a screw-jack h is provided for anchoring the carriage with the tracks off the ground for firing, as shown in Fig. 5. The chain tracks may be connected with the trail beams by dovetailed joints c, d, and the front part e of the gun carriage may carry a detachable wheeled axle f which facilitates road transport and reduces the width of the carriage when the endless tracks are removed. The endless tracks are so positioned that the centre of gravity of the gun carriage is in a transverse plane passing through the centre portions of the tracks.
