Abstract
174,022. Flettner, A. July 7, 1920. Rudders steering-gear.-Relates to steerina-devices wherein an auxiliary rudder mounted upon the main rudder is employed to produce or assist in deflexion of the main rudder, or wherein a number of auxiliary rudders are so employed, and consists in mounting the main rudder so that it is free to swing around through 180‹ when the ship reverses its direction and without disconnection of the actuating-gear of the auxiliary rudder. The auxiliary is also free to turn continuously on its axis relative to the main rudder and through 360‹. The spindle 128 of the main rudder 126 is free to swing through 180‹ and carries the driving-gear 130, 131, 132, 133, 134 of the auxiliary rudder 127. This gear is driven from an electric motor 129 through reversible worm gear. When the main rudder swings on reversal, the gear-wheel 132 rolls around the fixed wheel 131 and the auxiliary rudder turns on its axis until it lines up with the main rudder in the fore-and-aft position. The auxiliary rudder lines up with the main rudder if the ratio of the gearing is a whole number. With two or more auxiliary rudders a similar movement on reversal takes place. The auxiliary rudder may be mounted on a central spindle instead of one at the forward edge. To facilitate manoeuvring the rear edge of the main rudder, or the front edge or entire surface of the auxiliary rudder, may be corrugated, undulated, wavy, or of stepped profile.
