Cutting stepped indexes.-In a machine for cutting-out index-spaces in books, an arrangement for obtaining a variable intermittent feed of the worktable comprises an arm 17, pivoted on a pin 37 to the frame of the machine, and having adjustably secured on it a slide carrying a roller 18 which co-operates with an extension 19 of the table. Turning in one with the arm 17 is a ratchet quadrant 20 actuated on the up-stroke of a treadle by a spring-held pawl 21 driven through links which allow lost motion to enable the cutter before actuation to rise clear of the paper. Work-clamping means comprising a bar locked by a connected bell-crank passing the dead-centre is described. The machine can be adapted for double index work by interposing a stop (not shown) in the path of the pawl 21.
