Farnace fronts; linings.-The inner wall of a furnace front is protected on each side of the fuel opening by readily renewable plates or strips d, Figs. 1 and 3, provided with lugs d<1> engaging with a rib c<1> on a shelf c bolted to the furnace front. The plates d are retained in position by an extension e<1> of the removable fuel passage e. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the innermost plate d is formed integrally with the shelf d<x> bolted to the furnace front and is fitted with a bolt g on which are threaded the other plates d. The destructive action of heat upon the plates may be retarded by refractory material placed between them in the form of slabs shaped to fit the spaces before insertion or inserted in a soft condition.
