Abstract

278,811. Smith, H. P. July 16, 1926. Walls; cooling.-Means for protecting individual tubes or sets of tubes of water-tube boilers from the direct action of radiant heat or hot products comprise, in the case of tubes arranged at the bottom of the combustion chamber of a pulverulent-fuel furnace, metallic segmental sleeve members 2, 3, Fig. 2, adapted to engage with one another and formed in one or more sections extending throughout the length of the tube. The terminal member may be formed by abutting the two segments and clamping them to the tube. The outer surfaces of the members may be provided with ribs or recesses to engage with corresponding recesses or ribs in the members on an adjacent tube. Where tubes are arranged adjacent to the furnace wall and exposed on one side only to radiant heat, semicylindrical members 2, Figs. 4 and 6, are provided having slots 2<a> engaged by projections 3a on security plates 3. The slots are of limited length to prevent the plates 3 moving into a position below the joints of the members 2.
