Abstract

172,393. Johns, G. M. Sept. 2, 1920. Condensers, atmospheric and like.-An apparatus for condensing oil and like vapours comprises a series of vertical tubes 18 opening at each end into headers 14, 17 and so arranged that the vapours entering at a connection 15 pass alternately downwardly and upwardly through the tubes, which are covered with fabrics 28 moistened with liquid from a trough 26 having projections 27. The liquid, after moistening the fabric, collects in a lower trough 29 and is delivered again by a pump 31 and pipes 30 to the upper trough. A fan 32 causes a circulation of air through the apparatus to assist in cooling the pipes 18. Each alternate pipe 18 is extended into compartments in a lower trough 20, each compartment having an outlet 25 so that the condensates from each compartment or from a series of compartments may be taken off separately. The top of each tube 18 is closed with a stopper 19 which may be removed for cleaning purposes, and inside the tubes spiral metallic strips or wires 18a may be used to give the vapours passing through a spiral motion and bring them into contact with the walls of the tubes.
