Abstract

Limbs, artificial.-Comprises a construction of an artificial arm of the type in which the opening and closing of the fingers is controlled by movements of the elbow joint, adapted particularly for cases in which the arm has been amputated below the elbow but which may be modified for cases of amputation above the elbow. The hand consists of four articulated fingers and a thumb, the whole structure being rotatably mounted on a hinge-pin 6. stops being provided to limit the motion in both directions. Finger flexing-cords 12 and extending-cords 13, Fig. 3, passing round guide-pulleys 11 within the fingers, are connected to straps 16, 17 respectively which are adjustably attached to a band 23 which passes around the upper-arm bucket 1, so that when the elbow is bent about the pivot 4 the fingers are flexed. The operating-cords 33, 34 of the thumb pass around pulleys and are connected to straps 43, 44 which are fastened to a band 21 encircling the forearmstump bucket 3 in such a way that an outward turning of the elbow extends the thumb whilst an inward turning flexes it. In a modified construction one set of controlling-straps may be dispensed with, the fingers being returned automatically to their normal open or closed position by springs, and the fingers may be made of flexible rubber instead of being jointed.
