Abstract

169,173. Anderson, H. N. Sept. 17, 1920, [Convention date]. Rolling wheels.-In a machine for rolling teeth on a blank this is given oscillatory and then continuous rotation. The blank for a bevel gear is mounted on a shaft 38, Fig. 1, rotated on an angularly adjustable base 32 by bevels 39, 31, the latter on a tubular shaft 28 which can be oscillated by bevels 64, 63, shaft 60, and bevels 65, 66, 67, the last two being loose but alternately driven by the motor 70 through worm gear 69, shaft 68, and clutches 72, 73. A shaft 80, Fig. 2, continuously driven from the shaft 68 by a belt 82, has cams 83, 84 feathered thereon, which when pressed apart by the toggles 88 throw the clutches 72, 73 in and out alternately by the link work shown. For the second operation, the shaft 60 is driven continuously at a higher speed through a clutch 77 and belt 75 from the motor. The die roll is carried bv a shaft feathered to slide in the shaft 28 and is advanced, against a spring 51 by a thrust bearing 49 and cam 132 which is rotated through worm gear 133, rectifying gear, and skew gear 139 from the shaft 60 so that the cam always rotates in the same direction, giving first a rapid and then slow advance to the die roll. The rectifying gear comprises direct and reversing drives both operating through one-way friction clutches 145, 155. A control lever 119, Fig 5, when moved to the left above the tongue 122 engages in a recess 112 in a lever mounted on a shaft 93 which it turns to straighten the toggles 88 through linkwork 92, 91. When the lever 119 is returned the toggles close up and discs 94, Fig. 2, open both clutches 72, 73. When the lever 119 is moved below the tongue 122 it closes and opens the clutch 77 by engaging a notch 113 in a lever connected to the clutch lever 117. If it is desired to reinsert a partlyformed blank, the die roll may be pressed against it to ensure correct angular adjustment by a lever 165 and projection 168. The machine is brought to rest by a band brake 161. For spur gears the blank 185, Fig. 10, is rotated from the shafts through gearing 176, and the die roll 186 through a flexible shaft 191. The roll 186 is mounted on a slide 189 which carries an adjustable cam 195 to clamp the blank when the roll is moved towards it by the cam 132 &c. The change-gears 200, 201 may also be used in the first modification. In a modified machine for bevels, the blank 210, Fig. 9, is carried by a shaft 211 which may be oscillated by a clutch 227, loose pinion 226, segment 224, Fig. 9<a>, rod 223, crank 222, shaft 221 and worm gear 220 driven by a motor 216, or it may be rotated continuously at a higher speed directly from the motor shaft through a clutch 217 and bevels 213. The die roll 240 is mounted on a shaft 239 feathered in a tubular shaft 237 which is rotated on its angularly adjustable base 238 by bevels 236, 235 from the shaft 211. The shaft 239 is also moved axially to press the die on the work by a cam 244 driven through worm gear 247, changegears 248, telescopic jointed shaft 252, and either of the clutches and bevels 255, 256 from the shaft 221. To ensure sufficient support particularly for small bevels, the blank 210 may be mounted on the coned end of a shaft 277, Fig. 8, by a nut 279 with interrupted thread and clamped against a block 275 bv a nut 278. The shaft end 211 may also be supported by a divided bearing 295.
