Lasting; special kinds of boots, machines for.-A shoe machine adapted to shape an upper without the use of a female die and to attach it, whilst on the last, to the sole comprises means for holding an upper blank and for pressing a last into it. The last 1 rests on a sole 4 on a removable platen 5 which can be raised or lowered by a screw 9 operated by bevel-gearing 14, 16 and a hand-wheel 20. The platen 5 in its raised position is accommodated in an opening 21 in a collar 22 removably mounted on standards 25 of the frame 11. An upper blank a is placed on the collar and gripped bv a yoke 26 having an opening 27. The yoke 26 can be raised or lowered by rods 30 pivoted to arms 33 operated through cranks 35, rock-shaft 36, and a lever, the yoke being held against shoulders 31 on the rods 30 by rubber or other resilient bushings 41. The yoke 26 has an endless groove 45 in its under face, adjacent the opening 27, in which is movably mounted a ring 46 carrying springs 48 which frictionally engage a lasting collar 47 having lasting members 60. The support 46 is normally held upward in the groove by springs 53 encircling pins 51. A plate 54 vertically adjustable through a screw 55 and wheel 59 is adapted to press down the pins 51 and cause the lasting- members 60 to penetrate the upper and sole. Excess of pressure on the plate 54 is indicated by compression of the bushings 41. In operation, the upper blank a is stretched over the opening 21 and gripped by the yoke 26 and the last placed in position on the sole 4. The platen 5 is raised until the marginal portion of the sole meets the flange 65 of the upper, which is now stretched over the last, when the plate 54 is lowered, driving the lasting members through the flange 65 and sole 4. On raising the plate 54 the springs 53 raise the pins 57 and ring 46, leaving the collar 47 attached to the shoe. The platen 5 is lowered and the shoe removed, and the flange 65 and sole 4 stitched together, the collar 47 forming a guide. The ankle and front slit are cut with the help of guide-grooves in the last, which can then be removed and the shoe finished.
