Abstract
623,961. Machines for moulding sole blanks. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). June 6, 1947, No. 14942. [Class 17 (i)] Apparatus for assembling and moulding the parts of a composite shoe bottom unit, comprising a mouldable insole, mouldable shank and heel piece and a steel shank stiffener, wherein the shank and heel piece is oversize (to reduce the number of size ranges required) comprises upper and lower mould press members 10, 12 respectively, and work-positioning fingers 14, 16 to engage the opposite edges of the insole as described in Specification 465,807 and locate it relatively to the lower mould member 12. To enable the shank and heel piece to be placed on the insole without interference from the fingers, these latter are supported on a carriage 42 free to move downwards in guides on the machine frame under the action of gravity from an operative to an inoperative position, after the insole has been located in the machine and before the commencement of the power cycle of the machine, and on manual release of a detent 70 on a lever 74 pivoted on the machine frame, from a projection 72 on the carriage 42. This detent is arranged to yield readily to pressure of the mould member 10 on the fingers 14, 16 to avoid damage to such fingers if the mould members' are actuated without first retracting the detent. The carriage is moved upwardly to return the fingers 14, 16 to their operative position ready to position a new work assembly on the mould member 12 bv engagement of a spring pressed detent 52, mounted on the lever 18 on which the mould member 10 is carried, and which engages under the bevelled edge of a plate 64 mounted on the carriage 42. This detent is disengaged from the plate 64 during the separation of the members 10, 12 when the lever 18 falls away from the pressure applying position, the carriage being retained in its raised position by the detent 70.
