Abstract

Liquid-pressure engines.-Relates to hydraulic pumps and motors of the type in which a rotor containing a number of cylinders rotates within an eccentric ring, about a shaft having distributing ports and passages, and in which the eccentricity of the ring is varied by swinging it about an external axis. In the construction shown, the eccentric ring v and its side plates w, x rotate in ball-bearings z on supporting plates 1, pivoted at 2 to the outer casing a. The eccentricity is adjusted by a piston in a fluid-pressure cylinder 18, or by a hand-wheel and screw 8. When the fluid gear is in use, the half-nut 26 is disengaged from the screw 8 as shown in Fig. 3. It is locked in either position by a spring-plunger. Or the screw 8 may be of such a pitch that the fluid gear may act without the nut being disengaged. A spring safety-device 32 places the ring in the inoperative position should the fluid-gear fail. The fluid is distributed to the cylinders j through passages in the fixed shaft b on which the boss of the cylinder-block h rotates. This boss rotates in a ball-bearing l in the casing and may carry a pinion from, or to, which the power is transmitted. As shown, the connecting-rods o are ball-jointed to the pistons and carry rocking shoes q bearing on the eccentric ring v. The outer ends of the rods are guided by links r. In a modification, rollers are substituted for the shoes q. In a further modification, the pivot pin 2 is movable for adjustment of the eccentricity of the ring v.
