Abstract

Rotary cylindrical valves. -In a rotary compressor or elastic fluid engine of the kind in which a cylinder or group of cylinders rotate eccentrically inside a crown loose on its spindle, free cylindrical pistons are employed with antifriction devices maintained in contact with the crown by centrifugal force, and the power passes through the hub on which the cylinders are mounted. Fig. shows a compressor or engine comprising radial cylinders 23 with a common base portion 22 which is mounted to rotate on a spigot 13 and is rigidly supported on a spigot 20 connected to a power shaft 19. The spigot 13 is formed on the end of a spindle 10 secured in adjustable position by a lever 15 bolted to a bracket 18 on the end plate 3 of the outer casing 2, 3, 4. The cylinders are provided with wall ports 24, and with base ports 25 co-operating with ports 26 in the spigot 13, which communicate through a passage 27 in the spindle 10 with a coupling boss 28 formed on the bearing of the end plate 3. The spindles 10, 19 are eccentrically mounted in bearings 5, 6 in the end plates and are formed with shoulders 14, 21, between which the cylinder body rotates. The pistons are drilled and tapped axially forming at their ends seats for ball-bearings 33 which are held by large set screws 34 with cupped ends. Alternating leather washers and piston rings are held on the pistons by the screw. The ball bearings are pierced centrifugally into contact with a hardened steel ring 9 held between the halves 7, 8 of a crown or drum. The angular adjustment of the spigot 13 regulates the working of the apparatus when used either as an engine or pump. In a modification, the crown or drum 7, 8 and the cylinder body are mounted on ball bearing and the spigot 13 is provided with two valves spaced laterally and communicating with alternate cylinders.
