Night-latches and like spring locks; wards; picking, preverating.-The spring-pressed bolt 2 carries a rack-bar 5, which is operated by a keyoperated toothed member 8 arranged with wards 9, 10 in a cylindrical casing 11 mounted transversely to the bolt casing 1. The casing 11 may extend through the middle of the bolt casing 1 or may project into the edge of the casing 1 and be held thereto by lugs. A notch 16 formed in the plate 8 engages a rib 12 in the case 11 to allow the plate to be turned through a certain angle, the wards 9, 10 having narrow notches 17 to engage with the rib 12 and prevent turning. A handle 23 carrying a rod 24 may be provided on the inside of the door to operate the bolt 2. The key is provided with bits and spaces so arranged that, when properly inserted, it may be freely turned in the holes 14, 15 in the wards 10, 9, but engages with the plate 8 to operate the bolt. A spring-pressed plate 21 mav be arranged in the case 11, which plate must be pushed in, against its spring 22, by the end of the key before the key is in correct position for operating the lock.
