Coal-cutting machines.-In a machine with a tapered cutter bar provided with two helical fins each having a thrusting face approximately at right-angles to the axis of the bar, the pitch of the fins decreases progressively in a regular or varying manner with the progressive decrease in diameter of the bar. In one form, the pitch is variable only at the end portions of the bar, and is constant in the intermediate portion.
