Abstract

Formaldehyde is prepared by passing methyl alcohol vapour and an oxygen-containing gas over vanadium pentoxide mounted on a carrier at a temperature of, say, 275 DEG C.; the air supply may be in considerable excess of the theoretical, and the methyl alcohol may be a wood spirit containing impurities such as acetone.
