Keyless mechanism.-The spindle T engaged by the square stem 10 of the operating knob is free to turn within and slide through the winding- wheel 21, and having its lower part squared, it carries a sliding clutch 22 with which the setting- pinion is united. The clutch is connected to the upper part of the spindle by a train of three levers 1, 2, 3 and, as shown, is thereby normally kept up in engagement with the winding-wheel. A disengaging pressure is exerted by a spring 4 behind the lever 2 but the operating-knob is held in by a suitable spring-and-slot stop device, till the hands have to be set. On drawing out the knob, the parts are left to the action of the spring 4. The lever 3 being set free, the clutch drops till the pinion gears with the setting-train 5. The lever 1 both raises the spindle T and locks the lever 3 in its new position. On pushing in the knob again, the condition shown is restored. A bolt A serves the same purpose when the movement is out of the case.
