Abstract

163,510. Wooby, G. H. Feb. 28, 1920. Alloys.-An iron alloy for malleable castings contains 7 to 12 per cent of nickel, 4 to 10 per cent of copper and up to 10 per cent of manganese, carbon, silicon, phosphorus, and sulphur being low. The iron is melted and carbon, silicon, &c. burnt out, then nickel and copper are added separately or as alloy, and lastly manganese is added. Unless a high carbon content is required, when anthracite coal may be added, sufficient carbon and silicon are introduced by the addition of ferro-manganese. A purer grade iron, such as blister steel, is required if the crucible process is used. Ferro-titanium up to 0.5 per cent may be added to make the castings cleaner. Various specific compositions of the alloys are given in the Specification.
