Abstract

Fluid-pressure.-In valve mechanism for controlling the steam brake of a locomotive either simultaneously with the compressed-air or vacuum brakes of the train, or independently by direct manual control the manual control is effected by a hand-wheel on the piston and valve carrying spindle. As shown in Fig. 1 the doubleheat steam valve a of the locomotive brake isadapted to be held closed against the steam pressure by atmospheric pressure acting upon the piston c, when there is a vacuum in the control pipe of the vacuum brake system of the train, the pipe h being connected to the control pipe. The valve can also be operated by the hand-wheel f. springs being provided if desired for regulating the touch of the sleeve of the hand-wheel. The pipe h is connected to the opposite side of the piston for operating in connection with a compressed air train brake system.
