Abstract

Turning.-The feed-rack of an angularly adjustable ram b of a vertical boring and turning mill meshes with a wheel c driven by the fixed axis pinion d of the feed-train and mounted on the angularly adjustable frame a carrying the ram. Balancing is effected by a pulley n, cord l, and spring fusee or like device m. The tool - holder may be mounted at either end of the ram, and the pulley n may be indexed 180‹ with respect to the wheel c by pinion gear q and a spring bolt p, in order that the cord l may act on either side of the axis according to the arrangement of the toolholder. Backlash, preventing.-To eliminate backlash the pulley n is not connected directly to the wheel c but to a narrow wheel o having a limited rotation relatively to the wheel c, as permitted by coupling screws passing through clearance holes, and also meshing with the rack on the ram.
