159,727. Luard, E. S., and Rawlings, V. P. Jan. 12, 1920. Hand-actuation; wear, compensating for. - Relates to railway-vehicle brakes operated both by hand and by power. Slackness or clearance between the brake hand-lever 6 and the usual member 8 fixed on the transverse brake shaft 1 is taken up by a device which is adjusted by a hammer blow and is automatically retained in adjusted position. The hand-lever 6 bears on a lateral projection 9 from the member 8 with the interposition of a wedge 12 which, in one construction, Figs. 1 and 3, is formed as one arm of a U-shaped member 13, the other arm having a slot 15 to receive a bolt 14 extending through a hole in the member 8. A spring washer 16 on the bolt serves to retain the member 13 in any position to which it may be driven by a hammer. In a modification the wedge is adjustable on the hand-lever 6 instead of on the member 8.
