Thermionic amplifiers and detectors.-The respective elements of a detector unit or group containing a thermionic valve for detecting or amplifying telegraphic and telephonic signals are constructed to be self-contained so that all connections are established by means of plugs, and two or more such units or groups may be connected in cascade by the operation of plug connections. Fig. 1 shows a diagram of the connections of a single unit. Three insulated conductors or bus-bars 1, 2, 3 pass right through the apparatus and terminate in male plugs, 4, 5, 6 and female connectors 7, 8, 9. The valve may be connected in terminals 30 on the top of the casing, as shown in Fig. 4. The grid 11 is connected through a leak 14 to a male plug 13, and the anode 10 through the primary 18 of a transformer to the bus-bar 1. The secondary 19 of the transformer is connected to a female plug 20 and the bus-bar 3. Fig. 2 shows a plug connector with female connectors to receive the plugs 13, 4, 5, 6, having leads 24 - - 29 connected up to the aerial, earth and batteries; the grid leak 16 with condenser 17 being preferably located in the connector. A telephone 23 may be connected by plugs as shown in Fig. 1. When two or more such elements are plugged together, the valve circuits are arranged in cascade.
