described in and by the following statement:-
This invention relates to a process for converting an alkali metal nitrite to an alkali metal nitrate by oxidation in an aqueous medium Patent Application No 34033/77 (Serial No 1593742) describes a process for removal of nitrogen oxides from gases containing them in which there is obtained an aqueous product medium containing alkali metal nitrite It is desired, in the process of application No 34033/77 to convert the alkali metal nitrite, at least in part to metal nitrate.
This invention provides a process for converting an alkali metal nitrite to an alkali metal nitrate by oxidation within an aqueous medium having a p H of at least 9, the aqueous medium also including an alkali metal carbonate bicabonali, the oxidation process comprising lowering the p H of the aqueous medium to less than 9 and adding a oxidant to the aqueous medium so that the alkali metal nitrite is oxidized to alkali metal nitrate.
Lowering of the p H is preferably achieved by adding carbon dioxide to the aqueous medium, the carbon dioxide preferably having been derived by decarbonation of the bicarbonates used in the process of application No.
34033/77, (Serial No 1593742).
The process preferably forms a stage of the process described in application No 34033/77 which specification more fully describes the present invention, (Serial No 1593742).

Claims (4)

WHAT WE CLAIM IS:-
1 A process for converting an alkali metal nitrite to an alkali metal nitrate by oxidation within an aqueous medium having a p H of at least 9, said aqueous medium including an alkali metal carbonate/bicarbonate, said oxidation process comprising:
(a) lowering the p H of said aqueous medium to less than 9; and (b) adding an oxidant to said aqueous medium whereby said alkali metal nitrite is oxidized to alkali metal nitrate.
2 A process according to claim 1, wherein said alkali metal nitrate is recovered by crystallization.
3 A process according to claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the lowering of the p H is achieved by adding carbon dioxide to said aqueous medium.
4 A process according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the alkali metal is potassium.
A process according to any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein the oxidant is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen peroxide, chlorine, chlorine dioxide and alkali metal hypochlorite.
