Abstract

158,759. Spence, W. L. Dec. 3, 1919. Force - feed lubricating.-A thrust bearing of the unit type comprising a spherically - seated thrust washer on one or both sides of a collar on the shaft, is lubricated by oil which is delivered to a central space S from an adjacent journal bearing by a helical groove in the bush or journal or both. The oil is distributed by grooves D cut in the surface of the washer W. The grooves are tapered radially and also on one side, as shown in Fig. 4, and do not extend to the outer edge of the washer W; they are radial, spiral or tangential in direction. The space S is formed by rounding the inner edge of the washer so as to clear the curved fillet in the shaft. Oil may be supplied through a passage H or N through or at the back of the washer, or the whole bearing may be immersed in oil.
