Portable machines; carriage-releasing arrangements; locking-devices.- A machine having parts compactible for portability is provided with means associated with one of the compacting movements for ensuring release of the carriage escapement mechanism in compacting, the carrying- case being of such dimensions that the machine cannot be enclosed in it unless the selected part has been compacted. For example, the selected compacting part may be the finger-wheel 42 of the platen on a spindle 38 movable endways to bring the finger-wheel into the position shown in full lines for admission into the case 60, 61, or into the position shown in dotted lines for use. On the left-hand carriage bracket 26 a bell-crank 44, 45 is pivoted, and is maintained in raised position by a spring 48, with the upper arm 44 lying in the bracket 26 and resting either against the spindle or partly across its end according to the endlong position of the spindle. The other arm 45 of the bell-crank extends in position to depress the carriage rack 52 when the arm 44 bears on the spindle. The arm 44 serves as a lock to prevent the inward movement of the spindle, and is extended to form a handle 47 for depressing it to permit the movement of the spindle, the depression at the same time releasing the carriage rack through the arm 45. The carriage may be secured in the correct position for portability by any suitable carriage lock; that shown consists of a detent lever entering registering slots in the carriage bar 20 and the stationary rail 22.
