23,826. Williams, L. Nov. 6. Typewriters. - R e - lates to tabulating- mechanism for machines of the "Oliver" class. The machine is provided with the usual paper-carriage 6 which carries the platen 10 and is mounted on rails 4, 5 on a shift-frame 1 movable transversely for change of case. The carriage is provided with a spaciograck 11 engaged by a pinion 12 on an escapement - shaft 13 mounted on the frame 1. The shaft is journaled at the bottom in a bracket 15 and at the top in a block 16 which may slide in a bracket 17 and is pressed by a spring 18. The usual release-bar 19 is mounted on the rack 11 and may be moved laterally so as to press on a collar 26 on the shaft 13, which is thereby tilted and the pinion disengaged from the rack. The tabulating- mechanism is constructed as follows. A scaleflange 27 on the rack 11 carries columnstops 28, each consisting of plates 29, 30 connected by a toothed plate 31 which enters between the rack teeth, the plate 29 being provided with a stud 32 which enters a groove 33 in the rack, and the plate 30 being provided with a spring 34 which engages the bottom of the rack. The stops 28 co-operate with a stopnose 35 on a lever 36 operated by a key-lever 41, these parts being mounted on the bracket 17 on the shift-frame 1. The lever 36 is pivoted on the end of a pin 37 carried by a plate 40 secured to the front of the bracket 17, and the key-lever 41 is pivoted on the middle of the pin 37 being guided by a slot in the plate 40. A pin 43 on the keylever engages beneath an arm 38 on the lever 36, engagement being maintained by a spring 44 connecting a pin 45 on the key lever with an arm 39 on the lever 36. The key-lever is formed with an arm 46 connected to a bar 47 which is secured to the shaft 13 by a screw 54. The arm 46 enters a slot in the bar 47, the lost-motion connexion permitting of the pinion 12 being moved to the front by the ordinary release-bar 19. The key-lever is held in the raised position by a spring which is connected to the plate 40 and the pin 45. The depression of the key-lever is limited by an adjustable stop 53 having an arm which extends in front of the sliding block 16, and the movement of the lever 36 is limited by a stop 52 on the paper carriage. When the key-lever is depressed, the stop lever 36 is swung into the path of the stops 28 and the shaft 13 is tilted to release the pinion 12 by means of the arm 46 and the slotted bar 47, the slot being of such length that the stop-lever is fully raised before the shaft 13 is tilted. Braking- means of the following kind are provided for restraining the carriage and for holding the escapement-wheel and the pinion. A bell-crank lever 60 engaged by a pin 62 on the key-lever 41 is connected by a rod 63 to a member 67 pivoted in a bracket 66 and provided with a spring brake-strip 68 arranged to engage the base of the carriage spring-drum 64. When the lever 41 is depressed, the rod 63 is moved to the rear against the pressure of a spring 69 and the strip 68 is moved against the drum. When the shift-frame 1 is moved, the pin 62 slides on the lever 60 so that connexion is maintained in all positions of the shift-frame. A roller is arranged underneath the drum to prevent it from being tilted by the brake. A spring-arm 75 on the key-lever 41 is provided with a curved brake-shoe 76 which, when the key is depressed, engages the ends of the teeth on the escapementwheel 14 and prevents the escapement-shaft from turning, so that the pinion 12 is maintained in position for re-engaging accurately with the rack 11.
