Description

(54) STEEL FOR REINFORCEMENT (71) We, BRITISH STEEL COR PORATION, a Corporation incorporated and existing under the Iron and Steel Act 1967 whose principal office is at 33 Grosvenor Place, London, S.W.1 do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: - This invention relates to steel for reinforcement. In particular it is concerned with a weldable reinforcing bar or rod which has been formed by hot rolling.
The steel has a high yield strength and the relatively low quantity of silicon in the steel enables a high prime product yield to be achieved when the steel is being manufactured. Furthermore, the steel can be produced in a basic oxygen furnace and subsequently continuously cast without excessive casting problems due to the combination of silicon and aluminium utilised.
According to one aspect of the invention a weldable reinforcing bar or rod which has been formed by hot rolling, consists of a steel containing between 0.15% and 0.27% carbon, between 1.10% and 1.50% manganese, between 0% and 0.14% silicon, between 0.003% and 0.02% nitrogen, between 0.05% and 0.20% vanadium, between 0% and 0.05 O aluminium, less than 0.05% phosphorus, and less than 0.05% sulphur, the remainder being iron and unavoidable impurities, the steel having a minimum yield strength of 400 Newtons/mm2.
Accordng to a further aspect of the invention a weldable reinforcing bar or rod, which has been formed by hot rolling, contains all the elements specified in the preceding paragraph in the ranges mentioned, and in addition has a niobium content of between 0% and 0.04, the remainder being iron and unavoidable impurities, and the steel having a minimum yield strength of 400 Newtons/mm2.
The vanadium content may be of a narrower range, namely, 0.050/O to 0.15%.
The carbon content of the steel may be in the range of 0.16% to 0.22%.
The manganese content of the steel may be in the range 1.10% to 1.50%.
The silicon content may be in the range 0.02% to 0.12%.
Nitrogen may be in the range 0.010% to 0.016%.
The vanadium content may be further restricted to the range 0.05% to 0.09%.
The bar or rod may have a plain surface or alternatively it may be rolled with ribs.
The steel which is rolled to form the bar or rod may be produced by the continuous casting method. Alternatively, the steel may be cast in ingot form prior to rolling. The hot rolled bar or rod is preferably allowed to cool substantially only in air.
Examples of typical compositions of steels according to the invention together with their respective yield strengths and tensile strengths are given in the following table.

The above steels are suitably made in a basic oxygen furnace and continuously cast into billets. Additions of vanadium or niobium are typically made in the ladle. The nitrogen content of the steel may also be adjusted by additions of nitrogen-containing compounds to the steel in the ladle. These billets are subsequently hot rolled in a continuous rolling mill, the resulting bar being cooled by air only on its exit from the finishing stand of the mill.
