Abstract

Harpoons; projectiles.-A claw for harpoons and like weapons or projectiles for use in catching whales or other mammals is provided at its free end with a pivoted prong. In one form, as shown in Fig. 2, a claw 1, pivoted at 2 to the harpoon, has a prong 3 capable of rotation about a pivot 6 between stop pins 7 and 8. In another form, as shownin Fig. 3, two surfaces 9 and 10 are provided on the prong to maintain it in the normal and operative positions, the surface 11 of a slot acting as a stop. The claw and prong are normally held against the body of the harpoon by elastic bands &c., which are stripped off when the harpoon enters the whale, and their rotation, effected by the pull on the line or the firing of an explosive charge, may be assisted by a helical or a plate spring 12.
