Abstract

157,628. Lawrence, H. S. Dec. 12, 1919. L i n e a r - dimension gauges adapted for measurement or comparison comprise a pair of jaws 12, 12' having a V-shaped opening .so that the insertion of the article to be gauged separates them, the movable jaw 12 being carried by .a sliding rack member 9 gearing with a sector 8 on a pivoted arm 4 movable over one or several concentric scales on a sector plate 3. The rack is held into engagement with the sector 8 by a spring 11. The arm 4 may be provided with one or more projecting fingers having verniers 7, 7<1> for the scales, which may be of different character, such as fractions of an inch, millimetres, and wire gauge. Adjustable limit-pieces 14 may be fitted to the sector plate 3 when the gauge is used for comparison. The gauge may be placed upright as shown and secured at the base 1 to a bench &c., or it may be placed horizontally or at an inclination, the movable jaw then being returned to the closed position by a spring.
