Halogen hydrocarbons; chlormethanes.-Hydrocarbons are mixed with halogens, if necessary with addition of an inert gas, and allowed to react at 150-500‹ C. in presence of metals or salts of metals like iron, copper and antimony which form two series; the resulting halogen compounds may be separated in known manner. The production of mixtures of methyl chloride and dichlormethane, dichlormethane and chloroform, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride, from methane and chlorine in the presence of ferric chloride is mentioned.
