Abstract

157,252. Cooper, W. Aug. 13, 1918, [Convention date]. Hand-grip, facititating; hand guards.-A handle for a shovel or the like is formed so as to facilitate the grip of the hand to prevent rotation of the handle and spade, and a guard is also provided. At or near the outer end of the long handle 2 of a shovel on the under side is fixed a block 3, Figs. 2 and 3, preferably by rivets 5 so that the hand may grip the handle 2 and block 3. A guard or shield 4, through which the fingers pass when gripping the handle, is attached so as partly to surround the block 3. The shield may be attached by clips 7 which may be riveted on the handle 2, and additional clips or lugs 9 may engage the sides of the block 3. In the modification shown in Fig. 6 the shield is attached at one end to the block 3 by a clip 11 and rivet 12, and its other end 14 is attached by a screw 15 to the underside of the handle 2.
