Abstract

157,052. Whitney Machine Co., (Assignees of Whitney, P. F.). April 19, 1919, [Convention date]. Rotating-tool machines and apparatus. - The bed roll of a rotary-tool leatherworking machine is mounted intermediately of the ends of the swinging arms which carry it to and away from the work, roll or tool, one end of the arms being pivoted to the machine frame and the other end connected to crank operating-mechanism put into action by a treadle-operated one-revolution clutch. In the machine shown, the work roll 2 is constantly rotated in fixed bearings by a belt pulley 17, the feed roll 4 being journaled in yielding bearings 6. The swinging arms 9, carrying intermediately the bed roll 7, are pivoted at one end 10 to the machine frame and at the other end 11 are connected by a twopart yielding coupling-rod 12, 14 to cranks 15 on a shaft 16. Guide-brackets 32 for the swinging arms are provided on the frame. Upon the shaft 16 is loosely mounted a constantly driven pulley 18 which drives the feed roll 4 through gears 18a, 19, the shaft 20, and gears 26, 27, 29, the feed-roll shaft driving the bed roll 7 through gears 30, 31. The shaft 16 is normally stationary but is rotated when required through a half revolution in order, by means of the cranks 15, to move the bed roll into or out of its working position. For this purpose a two-to-one gear 25, 24 is provided, the gear 24 being loose on the constantly rotating shaft 20 and connected thereto when required by means of a one-revolution clutch 22, thrown into action by depressing a treadle 35. During this rotation, the shaft 16 makes a half rotation moving the bed roll towards or away from the work roll, the parts remaining in either position until the treadle is again depressed. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also a gravity detent 34, Fig. 4 (Cancelled), normally holding the clutch parts out of engagement, but adapted to be withdrawn by a rocking element 38 when the treadle is depressed. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
