.To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that 1, ROBERT F. VHITNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winchester, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leather-Working Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that type of leather working machine in which the bed roll, or other support, is mounted in swinging arms adapted to carry it to and away from the work roll, or tool; and the object of the invention is to so dispose and combine the various parts of the machine as to secure the best action and results and at the same time keep the operative parts well above the base of the machine throughout its operation.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the machine;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the machine looking from the right of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the machine; and Fig. 4 is a view of the clutch and treadle mechanism.
The various parts of the machine are mounted on frame 1; work roll 2 having its shaft 3 journaled therein; feed roll 4 having its shaft 5 journaled in bearings 6 yieldingly mounted in the frame; bed roll 7 having its shaft 8 journaled in swinging arms 9 intermediate their ends; and said swinging arms being pivoted at their lower end 10 to the frame and at their upper end 11 to one end of rods 12, which are lengthwise cushioned by springs 13 and engaged at their other end 14 by cranks 15 on crank shaft 16 journaled in the frame.
The driving mechanism comprises these pulleys and gears supplemented by clutch mechanism :Pulley 17, aflixed to work roll shaft 3, drives the work roll independently of the other rolls; pulley 18 (Fig. 1), rotatably mounted on crank shaft 16, is furnished with gear 18 which engages and drives gear 19 keyed on clutch shaft 20 (Fig. 3) which is journaled in the frame and Whereon is disposed clutch 21 comprising (Fig. 3) driving clutch member 22, fixedly mounted on said clutch shaft 20, and driven clutch member 23, rotatably mounted on said shaft and furnished with gear 24 (Fig. 3)

which engages and drives gear 25 keyed on crank shaft 16; clutch shaft 20 carries also gear 26 aflixed thereto and engaging and drlvlng idler 27 pivoted to the frame at 28,
'which idler engages and drives gear 29 afiixed to feed roll shaft 5, to which shaft 5 1s also affixed gear 30 adapted to engage and drive gear 31 affixed to bed roll shaft 8.
The swinging arms 9 are laterally supported and guided in their oscillations by forked arms 32 bolted to the frame.
No particular form of clutch is shown but, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4, driven clutch member 23 is normally held out of operative engagement with driving clutch member 22 by the free end 33 of the gravity controlled arm 34 pivoted to crank shaft 16; and the clutch members are thrown into operative engagement by mechanism under the control of the operator and comprising treadle 35 fulcrumed on the frame at 36 and attached to connecting rod 37 operatively connected with rock shaft 38 journaled in the frame, to which rock shaft is attached arm 39 engaging and adapted to raise the free end 33 of arm 34, thereby permitting the clutch members to automatically become operatively engaged in any of the various and well known manners, the arrangement being such that the gravity controlled arm 34 disengages the clutch members and holds them in their normal position (Fig. 4) after one rotation of driven clutch member 23.
The ratio of gear 24 to gear 25 is that of 1 to 2, the result being that each depression of the treadle automatically either separates the rolls, or, if separated, brings them together, and leaves them separated, or together, as the case may be, till the treadle is again depressed.
The operation is as follows The rolls being together as shown in Fig. 2: work roll 2 is driven by pulley 17; crank shaft 16 is at rest; clutch shaft 20 is driven by pulley 18; driving clutch member 22 rotates with said clutch shaft; and driven clutch member 23 is at rest; the operator depresses treadle 35, thereby engaging the clutch members and rotating crank shaft 16, which makes one half a rotation, when the clutch members automatically become disengaged leaving the rolls separated; the operator then places a hide or skin over the bed roll and depresses the treadle, thereby bringing the rolls together, where they remain until again separated in the manner described.
I claim:
1. In a hide or leather Working machine of the character described, abed roll directly journaled in vertically disposed oscillating arms intermediate their ends.
2. In a hide or leather working machine, a bed roll journaled in vertically disposed oscillating arms intermediate their ends and means for oscillating the arms attached to the free end thereof.
