HIDE-FLESHING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 509,503, dated November 28, 1893.
Application led April 19, 1893. Serial No. 470,955. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR E, lVHlTNEY, of Winchester, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new anduseful Improvementsin Hide- Fleshing Machines, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to hide ileshing inachilies, and is an improvement upon the machine described in Letters Patent blo/133,039, granted to me April 19, 1892, and it consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be readily understood by reference to the description of the accompanying drawings and to the claims at the end of this specification in which my invention is clearly pointed ont. Figure l of the drawings is an end elevavation ofa machine embodying my invention, certain parts on the opposite end of the machine being omitted to avoid repetition said parts being clearlyshown in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section, and showing the parts at the opposite end of the machine in elevation. Fig. 3 is a partial front elevation of the machine showing the right hand frame and the parts contiguous thereto. Fig. 4 is a partial vertical transverse section of the machine the cutting plane being between the left hand frame and the ends of the bed and feed rolls, drawn to an enlarged scale. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on line c: nc in Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a section of the feed-roll driving gear and its clutch dog.
In the drawings A and A are the end frames of the machine connected together by the tie girts B, B and B2 as shown in Fig. 2,
C is the hide lleshing cylinder, mounted upon the shaft d having bearings in the frames A, A', and having secured thereon, outside of the right hand frame, the driving pulley C and provided with two series of operating blades arranged spirally thereon in opposite directions as in my before cited patent.
In the slotted upper ends of the frames A and A are mounted movable boxes which rest upon the inner ends of the levers b b which are constructed, mounted and adjustable substantially as in my said prior patent. D is the feed roll mounted in said adjustable boxes and having its periphery tinted or grooved longitudinally as in said prior patent. The boxes in which said roll D is mounted are pressed downward by tension of the springs c acting upon one end of the cap c the opposite end of which is held in contact with the frame A or A' by the bolt c2 in such a manner that theend of said cap upon which said spring rests may rise or fall to accommodate the feed roll D to the varying thickness of the hide.
E is the bed roll mountedin suitable bearings in the radius arms F F, pivoted at their lower ends to the frames A and A at CZ said radius arms having pivoted thereto a pair of toggle links e, e, the opposite ends of which are pivoted to the links e', e and the connecting rods ff the lower ends of which are pivoted to the treadle lever G G at g, while the other ends of the links e e are each pivoted to an ear h projecting from the lng h which inturn projectslaterally from the plate Htted to a bearing in the cap plate I bolted to the end frame, and provided with the lng h2 in which is fitted the set screw h3 by which said plate H may be adjusted endwise in its bearing.
The frames A and A have formed in their front upright bars horizontal circular openings t' into which project the pintles formed upon the lug h said frame being slotted at i for the passage of said lug h' as shown in Fig. 5. Y
To the front edge of each of the frames A and A' is secured the hollow hub H with its bore in axial line with the openings and has fitted therein the pin h5 provided with the head h6 and the spiral spring i2, which tends to force the plate H inward, until such movement is checked by the set screw h3.
The tension of the spring 112 may be increased or diminished by adjusting the hand screwj in its threaded bearing in the hub H' in an obvious manner.
Each of the radius arms F F has pivoted thereto one end of a rod 7c the opposite end of which-is mounted loosely in, and movable endwise through a bearing in the stand J secured in a fixed position to the main end frame, and said rod has mounted `thereon between its bearing in said stand and a shoulder on said rod, the spiral spring 7c the tension of which IDO tends to Amove the radius arms F, F, toward the knife cylinder when said radius arms and the bed roll are in the positions indicated by full lines in the several drawings, and thus lessen the power necessary to be exerted upon the treadlefto move the bed-roll E into the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and at the same time said springs Zo serve as cushions to prevent a shock or jar when the radius arms F, F, and the bed roll are moved toward the front of the machine.
The upright bars 01, a of the end framesA and A have set therein the adjustable stop screws a2 to limit the rearward movement of the radius arms F F to prevent any possibility of the hide being injured by the bedroll E being forced too close to the cutting edges of the spiral blades of the cylinder C. The radius arms F F have their lower ends forked to straddle the horizontal bars of the end frames as shown in Fig. 3, and their upper portions are within the openings in said frames and have secured thereto or formed in one piece therewith the extensions F F', but offset therefrom, so as to be inside of the end frames, as shown in Fig. 3. The tie girt B2 has formed in one piece therewith or secured thereto two brackets or arms M and M having formed in their upper ends slots to receive the boxes mm which rest vupon the screw stops m m', against which they are pressed by the springs 'm2 m2 in the housings 'm3 m3, and have mounted in bearings therein the roll N as shown.
The hide working cylinder C is revolved at a high rate of speed by a belt, not shown, leading from the pulley C to a counter-shaft or other source of power and motion is transferred from a pulley on the opposite end of the shaft a to the pulley O by the belt O as shown inFig.,2. The pulley O ismounted upon a stud, not shown, set in and projecting outward from the plate O2 and has secured thereto the pinion n, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, which meshes into and imparts motion to the gear P also mounted on a stud set in said plate O2 and having secured thereto the pinion n which engages with and imparts motion to the gear P mounted on the stud dabout which the the left hand radius arm F oscillates all as shown and described in mybefore cited patent.
In said prior patentthebed roll was revolved 4 by means of a sprocket wheel connected to the gear wheel P and a chain belt leading therefrom to a sprocket wheel on the shaft of the bed roll, and the feed roll was in like manner driven by a chain and sprocket Wheels to which motion was imparted by the gear N which answered to the gear P in this application. In my present invention I dispense entirely with the chains and sprocket wheels and in place thereof I mount on one end of the shaft of the bed roll E the gear Q and upon a stud set in the left hand radius arm F at o the gear Wheel Q through which motion is imparted from the gear P to the bed roll to revolve it in the direction indicated by the arrow 2 on Fig. 2, and on the opposite end of the shaft of said bed roll is secured the gear Wheel 1o having long pointed teeth, which, when the radius arms F are moved toward the rear by the straightening of the toggles, engage with similarly shaped teeth of the gear wheel` 79' mounted loosely on the shaft of the feed roll D and impart motion thereto. The shaft of the roll K has secured upon its end outside of the frame A the gear p2 of similar construction to the gear p which also engages the gear p when the radius arms F F are moved into a vertical or nearly vertical position. The gear p which as stated above is mounted loosely on the shaft of the feed roll D has one of its teeth as q made broader than the others so as to project outward from the outer face of the main body of said gear, and said shaft has firmly secured thereon just outside of said gear the hub R from one side of which projects the dog or lug r so situated as to revolve in the same plane as the projecting portion of the tooth q so as to be engaged thereby to cause said roll D to revolve. This construction and arrangement of the gear p and the dogr upon the roll D becomes necessary on account of the resistance that would be presented by said gear p and the roll D to the moving of the rolls E and K into positions in contact with said roll D, one beneath and the other above, caused by the gears p and p2 striking the gear p upon different sides of its center and tending to move saidgear about itscenter in opposite directions, if said gear p were secured firmly upon its shaft, as will be further described. substantially as shown and described in my before cited patent. The roll N has secured upon the end of its shaft a gear wheel p3, similar to the gear 112 on the shaft of the roll K, and constructed and arranged so as to be engaged and have motion imparted thereto by a similar gear wheel p4 mounted on the shaft of thev roll K, inside of the frame A, as shown in Fig. 3. Upon the same stud which carries the pulley O is loosely mounted a corresponding pulley, not shown, upon which the belt O is shipped when the treadle is in the position shown in full lines in Figs. l and 2 by means of a shipping mechanism, not shown, but connected to and operated by said treadle in the same manner as shown and described in my said prior patent. The bed roll E is preferably covered with a sleeve or envelope t of rubber or other elastic material as shown in Fig. 2.
By the construction and arrangement of the several parts of the machine as hereinbefore described, a machine is produced adapted to perform a greater range of work in treatment of hides than any heretofore in use. For some kinds of work only the knife cylinder, bed roll and feed roll with the mechanism for operating them are necessary to the proper performance of the work in which case the rolls K and N are removed from the machlne to save power and unnecessary wear of the parts. For some other kinds of Work such for instance as iieshing hides after they have been limed and the hair removed therefrom or when from any cause the hides are very .slippery it is necessary to add the roll K with its gear p2 so that, the hide being placed over the rolls K and E with a portion thereof hanging down 1n front of the roll K, if the treadle be depressed to move the arms F, F. about their axes of motion towardthe rear, until the roll E is beneath and the roll K above the roll D, the area of surface of the hide brought in contact with the surfaces of the several feed or drawing rolls will be very materially increased and the proper feeding of the hide 1s assured. In extra bad cases I add the roll N which still further increases the contact surfaces and the pulling power for feeding the hide. The working cylinder and the several rolls when acting upon the hide revolve in the directions indicated by the arrows on Fig. 2.
The hide to be operated upon is placed over the rolls K and E with the center of its length at or somewhat below the center of the roll E when the operator holding the hide by that portion which hangs down in front of the roll K places his foot upon the treadle and depresses it to straighten the toggles and thus move the rolls E and K into the positions, respectively beneath and above the roll D as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, when the hide will be wrapped about three-fourths of the circumference of the roll K one-half the circumference of the roll D and one-fourth of the circumference of the roll E and the hide is held by a iirm grip between said rolls as they revolve in the directions indicated to move the hide upward past the revolving blades of the cylinder C. When the operator places his foot upon the treadle to depress it he is assisted thereto by the reaction of the springs r/ 7e at the commencement of said movement and during the latter part of said movement and when the power of the toggles has greatly increased, the front ends of the long arms s of the levers S with the weights S are lifted, so that when the operator removes his foot from the treadle, the force of gravity acting upon said Weights and arms, the weighted rear arms of the treadle levers and the treadle rods will cause the radius arms F F andthe rolls E and K to be moved toward the front of the machine into the positions shown in full lines in Figs. l and 2, preparatory to removing, changing or inserting a hide. When the rearward movement of the radius arms F, F, and the rolls E, and K, commences, the fieshing cylinder C is revolving with the belt O' on a loose pulley, not shown, and as a consequence the roll E, the pulley O and the train of gearing connecting said roll and pulley are in a state of rest, and as the movement of the radiusarms F toward the rear continues the gears p and p2 both engage the teeth of thegearp' one below and the other above its axis and tend to move said gear p about its axis in opposite directions but as the gearp at that moment is held substantially in a non revoluble position and the gear p2 and the roll K are free to be revolved the gear p' is moved about its axis, slightly, in the direction indicated by the arrow 3 on Fig. l, without moving the roll D and the gear p2 and the roll K are moved in the direction indicated by the arrow 4 on Fig. l the result of which is to lift the front pendent portion of the hide and cause it to bag or become slack between the rolls E and K to permit it to be wrapped partially around the roll D. Just before the completion of the rearward movement of the roll E the belt O is shipped upon the pulley O and rotary motion is imparted thereto and through the train of gearing to the roll E and the gear p to revolve them in the direction indicated by the arrow 2 on Fig. 2 which motion is imparted to the gear 19 to revolve itabout its axis in the reverse directionto that indicated by the arrow 3 on Fig. l. The gear p is thus moved about its axis without moving the roll D until the lug q comes in contact with the dog r when all of the rolls in use will be revolved in the several directions indicated by the arrows shown on Fig. 2, and the hide will be moved upward between said rolls against the cutting action of the spiral blades of the cylinder C until its lower end has passed above the cylinder C. When the operator removes his foot from the treadle, the rolls E and K are moved away from the knife cylin- IIO der and the roll D, the hide is reversed end for end, the t'readle is again depressed and the operation repeated.
I claim- 1. In a hide fleshing machine the-combination with a spirally bladed knife cylinder, a feed roll mounted in yielding bearings, adjustable stops to limit the inward movement of said feed roll, a bed-roll mounted in bearings in a pair of radius arms, and a mechanism having provision for moving said bed roll toward said knife cylinder, of a pair of weighted elbow levers constructed and arranged to engage the rear edges of said radius arms and have their weighted arms raised by the rearward movement of said radius arms, whereby said weighted levers are made to assist in moving the bed roll toward the front of the machine when the foot is removed from the treadle.
2. In a hide iieshing machine the combination with a spirally bladed working cylinder, a feed-roll mounted in yielding bearings, adjustable stops to limit the inward movement of said feed-roll, a bed-roll mounted in bearings in a pair of radius arms and a mechanism having provision for moving said bedroll toward the working cylinder, of a pair of weighted elbow levers constructed and arranged to be engaged by said radius arms as they are moved about their axes of motion toward the leshing cylinder to raise the weighted ends of said levers; and a pair of springs constructed and arranged to be compressed by the forward movement of said radius arms and to react thereon to assist in moving said arms and the bed roll toward the i'leshing cylinder.

In a hide ieshing machine the combination with the working cylinder C, the feed-roll D mounted in yielding bearings; of the rolls E and K mounted in bearings in a pair of radius arms in positions to engage with the feed roll D, one above and the other below the same, when said radius arms are moved about their axes of motion toward the working cylinder whereby a greatlyincreased grip is obtained upon the hide for drawing it through the machine; and mechanism having provision for revolving said working cylinder and rolls; and mechanism having provision for moving said radius arms and the rolls E and K toward and from the feed roll.

In combination with the iieshing cylinder C, and the feed-roll D mounted in yielding bearings; the gear wheel p mounted loosely on the shaft of said feed-roll and provided with a laterally projecting tooth q; the dog r firmly secured upon said shaft in position to engage with said tooth q; the rolls E and K mounted in bearings in a pair of ra- 'dius arms; the gears p and p? fixed on the shafts of said rolls E andK respectively in positions to engage with 'the gear p one below and the other above the same when the radius arms and said rolls are moved toward said feed-roll; a lever operated mechanism having provision for moving said rolls E and K toward the feed-roll D; the pulley O; and a train of gears connecting said pulley with the roll E and adapted to transmit motion from said pulley to said roll.
5. The combination of the fleshing cylinder C; the feed roll D; the radius arms F, F', the rolls E and K mounted in bearings in said arms; the gears lo and p2 fixed on the shafts of the rolls E and K respectively; the gearp mounted loosely on the shaft of the feed-roll D and provided With the lateraliy projecting lug q; the dog r firmly secured on said shaft and adapted to engage said lug; mechanism having provision for imparting rotary motion to the working cylinder and the roll E; and mechanism for moving said rolls E and K toward and from the feed-roll D.

The combination'of the fleshing cylinder C; the feed-rolls D and N mounted in yielding bearings one above the other; the roll E mounted in fixed bearings in a pair of radius arms; the roll K mounted in yielding bearings in the same radius arms; the gears 29,192, and p3 fixed respectively on the shafts of the rolls E, K, and N; the gearp mounted loosely upon the shaft of the roll D and provided with the laterally projecting lug q; the dog r fixed upon the shaft of said roll D in position to engage said lug q; mechanism having pro- Vision for imparting rotary motion to the working cylinder and the roll E; and mechanism having provision' for moving said rolls E and K toward and from the feed roll D.
7. In a hide fleshing machine the combination with a spirally bladed knife cylinder, a feed-roll mounted in yielding bearings, a bedroll mounted in bearings in a pair of radius arms and mechanism having provision for moving said bed toward and from said knife cylinder, of a pair of springs constructed and arranged to be compressed by the movement of said radius arms and the bed-roll away from said knife cylinder, .and to react thereon to assist in moving said bed-roll toward the knife cylinder.
