Abstract

Gravity, materials descending by; agitating appliances; charging and discharging.-Apparatus for drying salts, particularly ammonium sulphate, of the kind in which the material falls in a shower down a shaft wherein it is dried by ascending hot gases, comprises cones disposed at different levels in the shaft baffle-bars, preferably of triangular section between the cones, and means such as baffles for directing the falling material from cone to cone. The salt-receiving surfaces may be subjected to continuous or intermittent concussion or vibration. Fig. 1 shows a shaft drier having cones h and grids i formed of triangular bars secured to a rod e, and baffles l connected by levers k to the rod which is suspended from a stirrup f operated by a cam g driven intermittently by hand through a belt w. The cones and grids are thus reciprocated up and down and the flaps l oscillated. The cones and flaps may be perforated. Hot air is introduced through the pipe m and escaping by the pipe n is passed through a dust-collector. Salt is fed in by an elevator p and removed by a screw conveyer b, passing through breaking-rolls c to a hand d by which it may be carried to store or back to the elevator. In a modification, the cones, grids and baffles may be fixed, the tower being shaken at intervals by blows from a cam and spring actuated hammer.
