Abstract
Anthraquinone is obtained by treating anthracene, dissolved or suspended in an anhydrous acid medium, with oxygen or air in the presence of a water-fixing agent and a small quantity of a nitrite. An additional oxygen carrier or a neutral solvent may be added. The product is free from nitro products and other impurities. According to examples, oxygen under pressure is introduced into a vessel containing anthracene, anhydrous acetic acid and acetic anhydride, or anthracene, anhydrous proprionic acid, benzene and dry sodium acetate, together with a small quantity of sodium nitrite. After some hours the oxidation is complete and the anthraquinone is filtered off. Specification 156,215 is referred to.
