Abstract

156,281. Picard, L. July 2, 1919. Breaking and scutching apparatus; carding-engines.-Flax straws and the like and flax waste or refuse are treated mechanically to obtain fibres from them, whilst they are under the influence of hot or warm dried air. Flax straws are passed between a series of breaking-rollers through perforations in which issues a supply of air, which has been specially dried and which is of a temperature of from 35‹ to 40‹ Centigrade. The whole machine is enclosed in a suitable casing. The machine comprises a series of grooved endless aprons a, Fig. 1, with which co-operate fluted crushing-rollers b, b<1>. The ridges of the later cylinders b<1> are made sharper than those of the earlier cylinders b. Heated dried air is supplied through a pipe g and distributed through pipes h, i, e, f to all the cylinders. Valves j and pressure gauges k are provided. A fan is used to ensure efficient circulation of the air. Short straws are treated in a machine which comprises carding-devices in addition to an endless grooved apron m, Fig. 3, and pressure rollers n. The carding-devices consist of a travelling apron m<1> provided with carding-teeth and a co-operating fixed frame o provided with similar teeth. The material is further treated by a carding-cylinder p surrounded by smaller carding-cylinders q. The tow produced is removed by a doffing-comb r, and falls on to a plate s. All parts of the apparatus are supplied with dried air which is distributed in a manner similar to that described with reference to Fig. 1.
