Abstract
Aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons or their derivatives are oxidized to alcohols, aldehydes, ketones or carboxylic acids by interaction with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas at a pressure greater than atmospheric in the presence of an oxygen carrier. The temperature may be raised; and the hydrocarbons may be oxidized alone, in solution, or in suspension. Suitable oxygen carriers are platinum sponge, vanadium oxide, nitrous vapours or metallic salts. According to examples:-(1) oxygen is led into toluene, containing a little nitric acid and heated to 80-100 DEG C., until a pressure of 14 atmospheres is reached; the product is a mixture of benzaldehyde and benzoic acid; (2) paraffin oil is oxidized to fatty acids by adding a little nitric acid and heating the mixture to 500 DEG C. in the presence of oxygen at an initial pressure of 10 atmospheres and a trace of vanadium oxide.
