Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN AND RELATING TO MOVABLE BAR RIERS (71) I, GEORGE ALBERT ANTHONY NICHOLLS, a British subject of Cinderfield, Meath Green Lane, Holey, Surrey, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to movable barriers and has particular, but not exclusive, application to movable barriers for controlling vehicular traffic.
Sliding movable barriers, such as security gates, are widely used for controlling vehicular traffic through an access, such as an entrance to commercial or industrial premises.
Such barriers conventionally require lower and/or upper tracks permanently spanning the access in order to adequately support the barrier in its extended position (i.e. closing the access). Lower tracks easily become blocked with ambient matter such as leaves and dirt whilst upper tracks limit the height of the access. It is an object of this invention to provide a movable barrier assembly which does not require such permanent tracks so that the access can be unobstructed when the barrier is in its retracted position (i.e. opening the access).
According to the present invention therefore, there is provided a barrier assembly comprising a static support member; a movable support member carried by said static support member for translational movement relative thereto to progressively extend from said static support member; a barrier member carried by said movable support member for translational movement relative thereto to progressively extend from the distal (with respect to the static support member) end of said movable support member; and drive members for extending the movable support member from the static support member and the barrier from the movable support member. It will be appreciated that such an assembly permits of closure of a wider access span than would be possible if the barrier were carried directly by the static support.
The invention has particular application to the control of vehicular traffic and it is preferred therefore that, in the extended position of the barrier, its distal end should beat a distance of at least six feet from the adjacent end of the static support member. Usually, said distance will be at least twelve feet if two-way traffic flow is to be permitted.
The barrier can be a bar but more usually will be a gate leaf of, for example, mesh supported on a frame. In the latter case, the relative sizes and speeds of movement of the movable member and the gate preferably will be such that, in its extended position, the proximal end of the gate does not extend beyond the static support member.
Suitably, the movable support member is a beam which is slidably received in the static support member. When the barrier is a gate, this beam can be located above, below or at a level intermediate the height of the gate.
The static support member can comprise a hollow beam slidably receiving the movable support member and supported at longitudinally spaced intervals by two or more posts.
It is especially preferred that, in the extended position of the barrier, no more than half of the barrier length extends from the movable support member and, similarly, no more than half of the said movable support member extends from the static support member. It is also preferred that in the retracted position of the barrier, the barrier and movable support member are disposed within the length of the static member. Suitably therefore, the barrier and each of said support members can be of substantially the same length.
The respective translational movement between the barrier, movable and static support members usually will be linear but can, if required, be, for example, curvilinear.
Advantageously, each pair of said relatively movable components are interconnected by wheels to facilitate relative translational movement.
The drive means extends preferably simultaneously from the barrier from the movable support member and said movable support member from the static support member.
Usually, the same means also will simultaneously retract the barrier and movable support member. Thus, the movable support member acts as a movable track for the barrier which extends into the access controlled by the assembly only when the barrier is partially or fully extended. It is preferred that the drive means should be such that the relative speed of the barrier to the movable support member should be the same as that of the said support member to the static support member. It is also preferred that the drive means should include a coupling mechanism between the barrier and movable support member so that only one of them need be driven from a power source. Suitably, said mechanism comprises an elongate flexible coupling, especially a chain, secured at its respective ends to the barrier and the static member and at least one wheel, especially a sprocket wheel, mounted on the movable support member and engaging said coupling whereby when one of the barrier and movable support member is moved translationally, the other of said pair is caused to move at a proportiónate speed. Where the preferred speed ratio of 2:1 is required, only one wheel will engage the flexible coupling. More than one of said coupling mechanisms can be provided; in particular one mechanism or set of mechanisms operating in one sense for extending the barrier or movable support member and a second mechanism or set of mechanisms for retracting the barrier or movable support member.
The following is a description by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings of a slidable security gate in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention. In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of the gate in a partially extended configuration; Figure 2 is an enlarged partial perspective view of the gate of Figure 1; Figure 3 is an enlarged partial crosssection of the gate of Figure 1 in its retracted configuration; and Figure 4 is a diagrammatic representation of the couping mechanisms between the relatively movable parts of the gate of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, a slidable security gate comprises a static beam 1 supported at its ends by respective pairs of gate posts 2. The beam 1 comprises two transversely spaced pairs of vertically spaced rails 3 encased in a housing 4 (omitted from Figures 3 and 4). The housing 4 has a slot 5 in its forward wall and another slot in its bottom wall (not visible in the drawings) to receive a movable beam 6 from which a gate leaf 7 is suspended. Beams 1 and 6 and gate leaf 7 are of substantially the same lengths. The beam 6 comprises a rectangular tube 8 having a track 9 formed of a pair of transversely spaced channel members 10 depending therefrom.
The beam 6 is supported for linear movement along the static beam 1 by tyred wheels 11 running between respective pairs of rails 3. One pair of wheels 11 is mounted at respective ends of a rear axle passing through the rear end of tube 8 and a second pair of wheels 11 is mounted at respective ends of an intermediate axle passing through the midpoint of tube 8. The gate leaf 7, which comprises mesh 12 secured to an open framework 13, is supported by a pair of overhead wheeled carriers 14 located at its mid-point and at the rear respectively. Each carrier 14 has a pair of transversely spaced wheels 15 running in respective channels 10.
The gate leaf 7 is driven forwardly or rearwardly of the static beam 1 as required by a motor 16 (omitted from Figure 2) mounted on a bracket 17 on a forward gatepost 2. The drive from the motor 16 to the gate leaf 7 can be by any of the means conventionally used for security gates having upper and/or lower tracks. In the embodiment illustrated the drive to the gate leaf 7 is by a chain and sprocket wheel mechanism (not shown). The gate leaf 7 in turn drives the movable beam 6 by means of a pair of chains 18, 19 passing about sprocket wheels 20, 21 respectively.
Sprocket wheel 20 is rotably mounted within the forward end of tube 8 which has appropriate upper and lower orifices to receive the chain 18. Said chain 18 is secured at one end to the intermediate carrier 14 and at the other end to the beam 1 so that rearward movement (i.e. retraction) of the gate leaf 7 causes beam 6 to move rearwardly at half the speed of the gate leaf 7. Similarly, sprocket wheel 21 is rotatably mounted at the rear end within tube 8 and the chain 19 passes through upper and lower orifices in the tube to points of attachment on beam 1 and on the rear carrier 14 so that forward movement (i.e.
extension) of gate leaf 7 causes half-speed forward movement of the beam 6.
A static gate leaf 22 can be provided between gate-posts 2 beneath static beam 1 to prevent access beneath said beam.
In operation, commencing from the retracted condition of the gate in which the beams 1 and 6 and gate leaf 7 are vertically aligned, operation of the motor 16 in the forward sense moves gate leaf 7 forwardly, which movement is transmitted at half speed via chain 19 and wheel 21 to beam 6. Thus, beam 6 extends from beam 1 at only half the rate at which gate leaf 7 extends from said beam 1. The distal end of gate leaf 7 thereby increasingly projects from the distal end of beam 6 until, when the proximal end of gate leaf 7 is substantially aligned between the forward gateposts 2, only half of the beam 6 protrudes from the static beam 1. In said extended position, the gate leaf closes the maximum access span of which the gate is capable of controlling. A post 23 suitably is provided to locate the distal end of the gate leaf in said position It will be appreciated that the gate can readily be used to close accesses of narrower spans than said maximum. If desired, locking means can be provided to automatically lock the distal end of the gate leaf to the post 23.
When the access is to be opened, any lock securing the gate leaf 7 in its extended position is released and the motor 16 is operated in its reverse sense. Gate leaf 7 is thereby moved rearwardly causing chain 18 and sprocket wheel 20 to move beam 6 rearwardly at half of the speed of the gate leaf 7 until the distal ends of beam 6 and gate leaf 7 are both substantially aligned between forward gateposts 2. In said position, the gate is in its retracted position permitting traffic, pedestrian or vehicular, to pass between the opening defined between forward gateposts 2 and post 23.
If desired, limit switches can be provided to automatically stop motor 16 when the gate leaf reaches its extended and retracted position respectively.
It will be appreciated that the gate described provides an effective way of closing relatively wide accesses without the need of permanent upper and/or lower tracks.
The invention is not restricted to the gate so described but numerous modifications and variations can be made thereto without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the following claims. In particular, the beam 6 could be located below or intermediate the gate leaf 7 or gate leaf 7 replaced by a bar, in which case the bar could be accommodated within beam 6.
