Abstract

155,925. Pepper, S. Oct. 7, 1919. Lace; lace machines.-Relates to improvements in the method of making bobbin finings of Valenciennes lace on curtain machines by the use of guide-bars and pickers. The method is also applicable to Levers' machines, wide breadths of Valenciennes lace being thus obtainable. The threads a, b, c from two full warp beams g, h pass up through guide-bars d, e, f. The threads b may be composed of reverse twisted yarn. On the first quartermotion, the carriages being at the back, the trick bar k falls 1, the bar f falls 2, the bar e rises 1 and the bar d falls 2 gates. The pickers j then enter. On the second quarter-motion, the trick bar rests and the bars d, f rise 1 gate while the bar e rests. The pickers are then withdrawn. On the third quarter-motion, the carriages being in front, the trick bar rises 1 and the bar e falls 1 gate while the bars d, f rest. The pickers j then enter. On the fourth quarter-motion the trick bar and the bar e rest while the bars d, f rise 1 gate, the pickers being then withdrawn. A picker j inserted while the carriages are at the back to the position n causes a thread a under an oddnumbered carriage, or a thread c under an evennumbered carriage to tie with the bobbin thread q of the next carriage to the left; the same picker inserted to n while the carriages are at the front prevents the particular thread from returning to its bobbin thread and keeps it loose. To make the Valenciennes effects in combination with ordinary curtain lace effects, an additional bar l for spool threads m is provided and is actuated in the manner of the ordinary curtain spool bar. Pickers drawn back to the line o then act on the threads m as interceptors and cause them to pillar with the next bobbin thread to the left. To make ordinary curtain ties, the pickers must be drawn back to the line p. In Fig. 2, the shaded discs j‹ represent pickers j held in position o while the plain discs j<n> represent pickers in position n. Where no discs occur, the pickers are being held clear of all the threads to produce clothing. The sections B' - - B<7> and F' - - F<8> represent the stages in which the carriages are in the back or front comb bars respectively. When the pickers j are worked as indicated in Fig. 2, the plaited pillar effects at B<2>-F<2>, the wicker work fining effects between F<2> and B<4>, and the double-gate effects between B<4> and B<7> are obtained. By means of the different ground ties shown in Fig. 4, nearly all the different effects of plat Valenciennes lace can be put together, exceptions being effects such as round-hole Valenciennes which require a double tie in the crossing of a mesh. To produce double ties, two spool threads m may be used or one spool thread in conjunction with a warp thread a or c, the picker being entered to n on the first quartermotion. When plat Valenciennes lace only is being made and curtain spool threads are not available, double ties are produced by traversing the threads b, c an additional gate and by entering the pickers j to the line r. To make the plat Valenciennes effects in conjunction with crossnet and curtain lace effects, a second fully threaded spool bar is placed between the lines o, p. When the invention is applied to Levers' machines, the fining threads, instead of being spread over numerous bars, are collected into two half-bars and one full-threaded bar corresponding to the bars d, e, f, placed at the back of the machine and the threads are intercepted by pickers to vary their ties as described above in connection with the threads a, b, c. The fine steel bars are thus available for the production of other effects.
