Lace.-Filet or square-mesh net is made on plain-net machines with two half sets of warps the threads A, B of which twist together and envelop pairs of bobbin threads C to form the vertical bars of the net. The horizontal bars C<1>, C<2> are formed from two bobbin threads which are traversed by the movement of the front comb bar. The warps B may be reversely twisted or the twisting of all the warps may be reversed at intervals. When both tiers of carriages are at the front, the back guide-bar carrying the threads B traverses one gait to the left while the front guide-bar carrying the threads A traverses one gait to the right. When both tiers are at the back both bars return to their initial positions. When one tier is at the front and the other is at the back both guide-bars stand. The work is taken up at each motion, instead of at longer intervals as is more usual, in order that the twist in the vertical bars may be evenly formed. The traverse of the carriages may be effected by moving the front comb bar one gait to the left every four, six, &c. motions, while both tiers are at the front, and by moving it two gaits to the right when the back tier has moved into the back combs. An alternative manner of traversing the front comb bar is described.
