Casings.-In a centrifugal pump, each element has a cover-plate 1 forming one side of the intake passage 15, this passage being completed by a crown ring 13 with guide vanes 14 and an intake volute 16, a rotor 6, a delivery volute 18 and an end plate. These parts are cast separately, and the cover-plate 1 has two extensions, the outer one 2 of which carries the cap 3 while the inner one surrounds the rotor shaft to prevent contact between the fluid and the turning members in the feed-passage. The shaft 7 is supported by a ball bearing 21 and has collars 23, 25 with chambers 27, 28 which are connected by tubes 29, 30 to the rotor chamber with the object of dispensing with stuffing-boxes. The crown ring 13 has a groove containing cord or metallic segments to make tight joints. The key 8 holding the rotor has two recesses in which are engaged two flexible split rings 11, 12. When assembling the parts, the volute 18 and foot 32 are assembled on the end plate 20, the shaft 7 carrying the rotor is inserted, the volute 16 is placed at the side of the volute 18 and the crown ring 13, secured to the cover-plate 1, is placed in position with the foot 31 attached. This arrangement permits the relative position of the volutes 16, 18 to be adjusted. A duplex-rotor pump with a single intake is shown in Fig. 3. the delivery volute of the first section being connected to the intake volute 16<1> of the second section, the sections being so arranged that the axial thrust is balanced. The rotor chambers are bounded by a crown ring 35 centred by screws operated from outside. A single-disk double-intake pump may be built up by symmetrically duplicating the intake passages shown in Fig. 1, in relation to a double intake rotor. Another similar group may be connected to this, and the structure braced by a crown ring 40, Fig. 4. The crown ring 13 may have peripheral ridges engaged in recesses in the volutes, or they may have flanges arranged between the volutes 16, 18.
