Charging.-The feed-shoot a of a vertical or inclined retort or gas-producer is controlled by pivoted doors d<1>, d<2>, which in the closed position overlap one another for the greater part of their length, and which when open form with the side wings d<3>, d<4> an unbroken passage between the shoot and the retort &c. The doors are counterbalanced, and the weight h<1> for the inner door d<1> is made heavier than that for the outer door, so that the former will close first. Springs may be used instead of counterweights, or the closing means mav be non-automatic. The outer door can be locked in the closed position by the catch k. Within the shoot an open-ended passage n is provided to allow escape of dust &c. when the doors are opened.
