Blow-down apparatus.-To prevent shocks due to rapidly shutting off a blow-down or other valve h, a by-pass pipe j is inserted in the discharge pipe i near the valve and is led back to the boiler or tank. A non-return valve l having a small leakage hole o in the flap, to equalize the pressure in the pipe and boiler, is inserted in the by-pass either inside or outside of the boiler, and may have an extension pipe j<1> inside the boiler, bent so that its outlet is near the bottom and points in the direction of the blow-off orifice. On rapidly closing the valve h, the water passes up the by-pass j, through the non-return valve l, to the pipe j<1>, and is forced in the direction of the blow-down orifice through the outlet k. When the flap valve is fitted inside the boiler, its casing ha.s an opening n, Fig. 3, which enables steam to gain access to the leakage hole o.
